Tools of the trade…
How it started. Ok well, not *quite* how it started-started. We’re jumping in the middle, sorta.
Let’s talk about tools. Everyone uses tools in their work. One of the toys tools I use is my copper still. I feel like a mad scientist when I play work with it. A copper still uses to heat to cause plant material to release its volatile oils, and plant-y goodness into the water. The steam rises through a column and into a condenser, where cold water turns it back into a liquid. The resulting liquid is a hydrosol, which is an aromatic, floral water. This hydrosol has many of the properties of the plant including healing, spiritual, & aromatic qualities.
I learned about copper stills in my Foundations of Herbalism class. I thought it was the coolest thing ever and so magical. I saved up to get my own.
For Raven Botanica’s products, I make hydrosols from many herbs like calendula, stinging nettles, mint, yarrow & sage. Each one has it’s own qualities. I’m amazed each time the hydrosol starts flowing from the tube. This is pure plant magic… an herbalist’s version of liquid gold.
This is just one of the ways I make ingredients for my skin care goodies. I use the hydrosols in my lotion, toner & room spray. Hydrosols are also great just by themselves. I love to just spritz my face, or cleanse my space with them.
Calendula is one of my favorite herbs to work with. Stay tuned for the story of how we met!
